It's Game On! Team Tuesday easily broke through the 175m target and only looked like slowing down when we ran out of tree shelters. Can Team Wednesday do better? It's going to be a great hedge, and it'll be in by Friday!
Fri 5th Mar 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Fri 5th Mar 2010) (18 images)
The ultimate (or is it the penultimate?) burn on the Fell. Several Fires dotted the hillside as we worked on this breezy but sunny Friday to clear the scrub.
Thu 4th Mar 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Thu 4th Mar 2010) (30 images)
One of the last days on the Fell cutting and burning hawthorn, gorse and pine before Spring finally catches up with us!. The last patch of gorse (for this winter anyway!) was cut and most of the material cut in the last few days was burned on five separate fires. Hopefully tomorrow will be the last day on the Fell burning brash.
Wed 3rd Mar 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Wed 3rd March 2010) (20 images)
One of the last days this year on the Fell for small tree removal produced a 27 person team. Four chainsaws were on the go cutting down scots pine whilst the rest of the team dragged all the brash to the various fire sites. It was exhausting but satisfying. This should enable us to have some great fires tomorrow.
Tue 2nd Mar 10HHF & Baal Hill: Tree Felling & Scattered Tree Removal (Tue 2nd March 2010) (11 images)
A split task today. The reserves manager (Mark), Sue, Emma, Dougie and Helen had an easy day in Baal Hill felling sycamore and beech - no pics!. Whilst, Craig led a team of twenty cutting and treating scattered trees and gorse up on the Fell.
Sat 27th Feb 10Derwent Reservoir: Woodland Thinning (Sat 27th Feb 2010) (12 images)
A snowy day in the woods at a frozen Derwent Reservoir. We started the day by digging out a parking space for the minibus, then got down to the task of opening up the aspen plantation around Millshields.
Fri 26th Feb 10Stanley Moss: Bog Restoration (Fri 26th Feb 2010) (15 images)
A tough gig today with drizzle turning to sleet turning to snow turning to ice on a very boggy bog. But we were a good resilient team and got three productive fires going in the hostile conditions.
Thu 25th Feb 10Stanley Moss: Bog Restoration (Thu 25th Feb 2010) (17 images)
It was our second day at Stanley Moss today and we had 2 brilliant fires. With five people on each fire and a VRO floating between the two, masses and masses were burnt. The first fire site lit within seconds. The fog didn't lift all day but we all still found time for a good laugh!
Wed 24th Feb 10Rainton Meadows: Hedge Laying Training Day (Wed 24th Feb 2010) (32 images)
Both teams came together today to learn the art of hedge laying. Thank you very much to our two in-house trainers; Morris and Mark! Remember to book for future training days as places are often limited. Finally, whilst the wider team were having a jolly, a small team where busy cutting willow from around the big lake at Low Barns (sorry no pics)!
Tue 23rd Feb 10Stanley Moss: Bog Restoration (Tue 23rd Feb 2010) (16 images)
Today was our first day this week at Stanley Moss burning brash to help with the bog restoration project. Once the brash is removed it will help heather (and other bog plants) to re-establish itself on the site. We had an amazingly large team for a Tuesday and the fire was the biggest one we have had so far this year. We would like to welcome back past volunteers and give a warm welcome to all the new volunteers (too many to mention individually).
Fri 19th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Fri 19th Feb 2010) (12 images)
A small team out today, but how much did we get burnt!! One of the best days we've had for a while (weather wise).
Thu 18th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Thu 18th Feb 2010) (15 images)
A fine day with a frosty start on the Fell saw a large team (for a Thursday) clear several areas of gorse and a load of small trees. A big welcome also to our new volunteers Hillary, Paul, Chris and Ben!
Wed 17th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Wed 17th Feb 2010) (7 images)
A massive team of volunteers turned out today to continue the scattered tree removal. We are making brilliant progress so thank you to everyone who has been putting in so much hard work!
Tue 16th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Tue 16th Feb 2010) (7 images)
Another fine day on the Fell saw a lot more of the small scattered trees cut down and transported to the fire site. A big welcome to our four new volunteers who added to the usual Tuesday turn out greatly.
Sat 13th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Sat 13th Feb 2010) (15 images)
With a blustery start to the day, Newcastle Conservation Society joined our regular Saturday volunteers to make another assault on the scattered trees of Hedleyhope Fell. There was so much cut, our task leader had diffuculty keeping up to treat the stumps. Also a big welcome to new volunteer Audrey!
Fri 12th Feb 10Low Barns: Wetland Management (Fri 12th Feb 2010) (18 images)
Frequent blasts of sunlight raised our spirits on this squally day as we cleared scrub from a lakeside chunk next to the North Hide. It looks a bit muddy just now but it will burst into life as we head into Spring.
Thu 11th Feb 10Burnhope Reservoir: Grassland Management (Thu 11th Feb 2010) (17 images)
A wonderful trip up to Burnhope Reservoir for the task force today. It is one of Sue's Northumbria water sites. We were removing small trees from a grassland area. The sun shone throughout the day and after the work was done we made our way up to the reservoir where Andy gave us a short talk on why all the felling of the conifers was taking place.
Wed 10th Feb 10Low Barns: Wetland Management (Wed 10th Feb 2010) (13 images)
Today we continued removing scrub from around the silvery frosty lake. (Thanks Madge for that description). The weather could not make up its mind with bright sunshine and snow showers. A large area was cleared right to the waters edge and beyond, with waders being the order of the day. A warm welcome to returning volunteer Andy.
Tue 9th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Tue 9th Feb 2010) (8 images)
The westward push along the fell continues removing scrub along the way. An obstinate fire and a squally snowstorm or two didn't stop the loppers, chainsaws and bowsaws getting on with the job, Welcome to new volunteer David who picked a challenging day for his first excursion.
    Fri 5th Feb 10Trevor Whittle (1945-2010) (14 images)
In memory of Trevor who will be deeply missed by his friends at Durham Wildlife Trust. Update: we gave Trevor a fantastic send off today, together with his family and friends from all parts of his life. Over 20 members of staff and volunteers whom Trevor worked with attended his funeral!
Thu 4th Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Thu 4th Feb 2010) (9 images)
Today the team continued cutting, dragging and burning small trees on the Fell. It might have been another cold day up there but plenty of work was done to keep us warm. Welcome to new volunteer Sam!
Wed 3rd Feb 10Hedleyhope Fell: Scattered Tree Removal (Wed 3rd Feb 2010) (15 images)
A BIG team out today cutting, treating and burning the scattered trees and gorse on the Fell. Welcome to new volunteer Karine!

    Spring

You will all notice a change to the type of tasks we will be undertaking. By about mid March the birds are busy breeding, the sap starts to rise and both these factors prevent us from carrying on with the tree and scrub management across our reserves.

So we will be planting a 750m hedge, removing miles of fence, resurfacing hundreds of meters of footpath and extracting tonnes of timber – all this before we start bashing balsam and bracken!
